Must packs for your next vacation! Physical sun protection edition

We lovveee the sun. In fact I created a whole brand around my favorite accessory while being out in the sun. However, like anything, there can be too much of a good thing. Staying out of the sun isn't something we are willing to sacrifice, but once we've soaked up a little vitamin D, we will properly shade ourselves from too much exposure.

Here's our top 3 ways to protect yourself from the sun physically, & of course without without chemicals!

1. Sun Hats: Your Sun Shield in Style

You knew we had to include this one, but for good reason! Wide-brimmed hats make more than just a statement, they’re your personal shade provider! These hats offer great coverage for your face, ears, and neck, which are some of the most sun-sensitive areas.

What to Look For:

  • Material: Opt for hats that are breathable & lightweight, materials like straw, cotton, surprisingly even natural wool. These will keep you cool while blocking those UV rays.
  • Fit: A hat with an adjustable band or chin strap is ideal, especially if you’re heading out on a breezy day.
  • Style: From bucket hats to our seashell decorated straw fedoras, there’s a wide-brimmed hat for every look. Choose one that complements your personal style!

2. Sun Protective Clothing: Fashion Meets Function

The right clothing is a game-changer when it comes to shielding yourself from harmful UV rays. Some garments are even designed with built-in UV filters that block a significant amount of UV radiation called UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)

My favorite way to shield from the sun at the beach is with a loose linen button up or protective swimwear. Swim options have come so far the past few years! Check out my two favorites from Maoi Swim, the Juju Bodysuit & Oceano One Piece

What to Look For:

  • UPF Rating: The higher the UPF rating, the more UV radiation the fabric blocks.
  • Fit and Comfort: Opt for loose-fitting clothing to enhance airflow and comfort. Natural fabrics like cotton & linen often offer great sun protection while remaining lightweight and breathable.
  • Protective swim: Invest in some that's actually cute! Otherwise you'll never wear it, been there done that.

3. Beach Umbrellas: Portable Shade Oasis

Beach umbrellas are a classic choice for those who love to lounge on the sand without completely roasting under the sun. They provide portable adjustable shade, that you can position exactly where you need it. Plus, they’re not just for the beach, you can easily set one up in your backyard or at a picnic to create your own shaded retreat.

What to Look For:

  • Stability: Look for umbrellas with sturdy frames and anchors that can withstand the wind. Some models come with sand anchors or stakes for added stability.
  • Size and Coverage: Choose an umbrella with a wide enough canopy to ensure your well-shaded. The larger the canopy, the more protection you get from the sun.
  • Ease of Use: Go for a model that’s easy to set up and take down. Some umbrellas come with a tilting mechanism so you can adjust the angle as the sun moves. If it's not portable, easy to set up or secure in the sand you might find yourself leaving it at home even when you know you shouldn't. Speaking from experience.

Here in NC our beaches get windy. There's nothing worse than an umbrella coming loose and tumbling down the beach. Here's our favorite product for windy beaches! They've been ruling the beaches around the east coast.

I always keep a mineral based sunscreen with me as well! Find a good one that works with your skin and you'll never miss the chemical based ones again!

Final Thoughts

These three sun protection essentials—wide-brimmed hats, sun protective clothing, and beach umbrellas—are game changers to enjoying sunny days without compromising on skin safety. With the right products, you can be stylish, comfortable, and shielded from over exposure to UV Rays. So next time you’re heading on vacation or out in the sun, don’t forget to bring these items so you can enjoy your whole trip under the sun!
