How are our Australian Felt Wide-Brimmed hats made? 

I fell in love with hats many years ago. Long before starting Augustine Hat Co. I owned hats of all different material, shapes, and sizes. When I learned about the process behind each hat I was shocked & so intrigued. So many fashion accessories these days are made so quickly, crafted to only last a season or two. Learning about the process and art behind Australian wool felt hats made me even appreciate each piece more, a true example of slow fashion, a product that when you invest in a quality product it can last you decades or a lifetime.

From Wool to Felt: The Process Unveiled

Our hats start with premium Australian wool. The wool is sourced from local farms where the fleece is carefully sheared from the sheep.Once cleaned, the next step is carding, which aligns the wool fibers and prepares them for felting.

The wool fibers are then combined and subjected to a felting process. This involves layering the wool and applying heat, moisture, and pressure to bond the fibers together into a solid, flexible fabric. This fabric is then shaped into wide-brimmed hats. This is wear we decide if the style will be on the stiffer side or floppy!

Shaping and Finishing

The felt is molded (this is wear we really get custom!) into its wide-brimmed shape, giving each hat its distinctive silhouette. This can look like our pencil brimmed Laguna hat, our smaller Summer Set, or even our western cowboy style the Dolly. The hats are then trimmed and finished with attention to detail. This can include adding a stylish bands or other decorative elements that enhance the hat’s look.
